Art Department Overview

The NHS Visual Art Department offers all NHS and P-Tech students an environment to work independently and collaboratively while developing an open-minded attitude towards different forms of creative expression. Students choose courses from an exciting variety of media in studio art and design and global art history classes presented at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. As young artists, students are challenged to develop visual literacy, higher order thinking and problem solving skills, planning strategies, creativity through the application of the principles and elements of Art and Design and accurate assessment. Art students are supported socially and emotionally within the department. NHS and P-Tech art students have achieved local and national recognition. In addition, many graduates pursue successful careers in the Arts and Design as well as art related fields. The NHS Art Department fosters our students’ development of a life-long appreciation of the Fine Arts including BIPOC Arts.
